Oh what a night! Yesterday was a day that had a bit of everything. Lansdowne.se and Sir William Promotion had a combined summer party. Junior and yours truly were in charge of the proceedings and that can only lead to one thing, chaos! As always a few late withdrawals added to the confusion. Silver as ”Grill Master”, Jr the ”Games Master” and i was the ”Master of Ceremonies” and the scene was set. The three competition events for the evening were. A card game called ”LANSDOWNE 25″ (i´ll explain the rules later). ”Bouncing ball in bucket” (3 distances) and last but not least a World Cup Quiz. Ball skills, luck and footballing knowledge were displayed by one and all and after a few rule changes and heated arguments the winning team was crowned. The ”2 Björns” (Uffe B o Biggy Wiggy).

It was a great evening that followed a very good afternoon. England actually played like a team and the pride came flooding back. I wasn´t sure about a couple of ”Don Fabio´s” selections (Upson and Milner) but they both performed solidly. Rooney looked sharper but still not 100%, Gerrard played like he does for Liverpool and John Terry would have died for the cause. Defoe did what he does best and put away his chance well and all in all it was a solid performance.

Due to the ”party event” i didn´t see the Germans beat Ghana but we all know what they are capable of. I am already looking forward to sundays game.

Junior is off to Halmstad, Silver is on his way to Spain (Pilgrim walk), dont ask! Uffe B and Thailands Lasse are off to Riga and PK to Kisa so there´s only a few of the ”usual suspects” in town for the ”Midsommar” celebrations.

My old mate Stuart sent me a great text from Mallorca.” The world cup is a bit like world war 2… the French surrendered early, the ”Yanks” turned up at the last minute and we´re left to fight the bloody Germans!”

Goodbye France or ”Au revior” as they say in frog land. I dont think many people will miss them. Lets face it they were only there because Henry cheated the Irish in the play off match. Once again ”what goes around comes around”.

Its a shame the South Africans didn´t start playing untill today. I just hope the South African fans find another side to support and dont turn their backs on the tournament. There probably won´t however be that many African sides in the last 16 to cheer for.

The South American sides are looking really strong. I am watching Argentina at the moment and am impressed with a couple of there ”reserves”. Aguero and Milito would be regulars in most sides. Even the left back Clemente Rodriguez looks sharp. However i still cannot see what everyone sees in Maxi Rodriguez the only side he would get in is the French! Maybe the English!!

The Greek defence is looking as solid as it was in the European Championships 2004.

I am getting fed up with all the website headlines. ”Goal of the season” ”a piece of genius” ”unbelievable goal” and so on. Just so they can get as many hits on the ”adverts” that appear before the ”film clip”as possible. I am however glad that i chose to have a look at Hammarby´s Linus Hallenius goal against Syrianska in the ”Superettan”. It is without a doubt one of the best goals (technically) i have seen since Marco Van Bastens volley in the European Championship Final 1988 against the Russians.

I am off to see if the Greeks can keep the ”Argies” at bay in the second half.

Another busy day at the office. That means i missed Portugal´s 7 goal lesson they handed out to North Korea. Hopefully i will see the goals soon as ”PK” tells me there were some quality efforts. That now means good bye ”Svennis”. I got home just in time to see the last 15 mins of Spain – Honduras and from what i understood from SVT´s commentators Staffan and Glenn the result was never in doubt. David Villa 2 goals is a good sign for the Spainiards.

Apparently none of the England players said a word at the so called ”show down” meeting with Don Fabio. That is about as ”gutless” as their performance against Algeria and not a good sign ahead of the Slovenia game.

Nyströms 22.30 programme. The discussion was why a woman hasn´t commentated on a football match live. I think its about time they did. Give them the womens World Cup or womens European Championship or even ”Damallsvenskan”. That´s only fair!

What goes around comes around. Brazils Lucio and Fabiano faked injury earlier in the game in an effort to get an Ivory Coast player yellow carded. So it was poetic justice when an Ivory Coast player got Kaka sent off for the same reason. In the ”good old days” players stayed on their feet and didn´t even try to get opponents sent off. Use the TV evidence to punish the cheats.

I managed another solo ”Stensö” run earlier today. All of my running partners are injured or ill. I guess they haven´t done the same pre-season training as i have.

At last the first World Cup scandal is upon us. The French squad refused to train today in protest at Nicola Anelka´s exclusion from the squad. Why was he sent home? He told the French coach to ”go f–k himself”. I have the feeling half of France have been wanting to say that to Domenech for months now. However refusing to train is not the way to solve the problem and i hope the ”spoilt brats” will be punished. Nowadays there unfortunately is no punishment available that would be sufficient for the crime. You get the feeling that banning them from the national side wouldn´t bother them that much.

Italy today joined France, England and Spain as favourites in trouble. It seems that only the South American sides have lived up to their reputations thus far.

England are having a ”clear the air” meeting tonight. I would love to be a ”fly on the wall” at that one. There are a lot of very big egos attending that meeting and lets hope they have the courage to say what they really think and hopefully get the wheels turning again.

It looks like my prediction regarding the two Swedish trainers will hold. Not more than 2 wins together for Nigeria and the Ivory Coast it´s now 0 from 4.

I have had a training free weekend and my body needed it. I am not sure however if my body needed that last ”Staropramen” last night though. However a new week starts tomorrow and a ”Stensö” run and gym session is already planned.
